Lone Star Rail News
I just heard on 590AM News that the Austin City Council voted to:
It's good to see some progress from the city on the Lone Star Rail project. If you followed my city council campaign, then you probably read/heard me mention this project as the right way to approach rail transit in the greater Austin area. It involves taking the Union Pacific tracks that run from Georgetown to San Antonio (i.e., the freight tracks that go down the middle of MoPac) and turning them into passenger lines for local and regional commuting.
Approve a resolution authorizing the negotiation and execution of an amendment to the interlocal cooperation agreement between the City and Lone Star Rail District to set the City’s increment participation level for the Transportation Infrastructure Zone funding at 50% and extending the “Two Year Timeline” viability measure.

Dave Floyd: New Firm and New Business After City Council Campaign
Now that the election is over, I'm back in action as a lawyer and consultant. I have joined my fiancee's law firm, The Foskitt Law Office, as an attorney and the Director of Business Development. I will continue to work with issues involving business and insurance law, as well as firm matters involving real estate law. Furthermore, the firm is now a Fee Attorney for Capstone Title (i.e., a real estate closing office).
In addition to working with The Foskitt Law Office, I am also continuing to work with the fitness start-up Gritness. If you haven't been to the site yet, check it out.

Community Garden Bill
This seems like a bill (filed at the Texas Legislature) that would interest a few folks in Austin: H.B. 262 would limit liability for the owner, lessee, or occupant of land that allows land to be used as a community garden.

Gritness
I've been doing a lot of work with the start-up Gritness for the past year. Gritness is a network which facilitates the creation and organization of cycling, running, yoga, and group fitness activities. It's an Austin based start-up founded by two avid cyclists. The project has come a long way, and I'm pleased to see this great article about Gritness and its founders in the Austin Business Journal. Also, Gritness was just placed on a list of Top 10 New Android Apps Worth Checking Out. Don't worry, fellow iPhone users, there is an app for you as well.

AYLA wins TYLA Awards
From the AYLA Facebook page:
AYLA was just named as having the best comprehensive programming for a large city bar association in Texas for the second year in a row by the Texas Young Lawyers Association! AYLA received 1st Place Public Service Project (The Reentry Project), 2nd Place Member Service Project (AYLA Trial Academy), and 1st Place Comprehensive! Congratulations to the Austin Young Lawyers Association, its Board of Directors, and members! This is great news! I love working with Austin Young Lawyers Association, and am very happy about becoming the AYLA Board Secretary for the 2014-2015 bar year. Also, finding out that the Reentry Project won 1st Place in the Public Service Project Category is especially nice considering AYLA just received a grant to translate it into Spanish.

Man of the Year
This is it. Team Fight with Floyd has until 3p today to collect online donations for the 2014 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man of the Year fundraising campaign. Through online fundraising, live events, and the amazing generosity of our supporters we're raised a truckload of money for blood cancer research. That being said, we'd like to blow out our fundraising here in the home stretch.
You only get to run for man of the year once. If you've been wanting to donate to my campaign, now is your last chance. http://www.mwoy.org/pages/ sctx/austin14/DaveFloyd
Donations of all sizes help, and if you have a friend who cares about our cause please forward this email their way.
Thanks for your support!

AYLA Austin Reentry Project
Great news on the AYLA front. The Austin Bar Foundation has given AYLA a grant to make a Spanish version of the Austin Re-entry video. By re-entry, we mean folks leaving jail to re-enter society.
Watch the Re-entry video, which has a cavalcade of (Bar & Grill) stars as well as other awesome lawyers. I appear in the first segment (along with +Ellie Carroll) to discuss dealing with criminal records.
And if you like the idea of this video as well as trivia, then join us at for Austin Bar Association trivia night at The Tavern Austin on 5/22. Proceeds go to the Austin Bar Foundation, the very same folks who are making the Spanish translation possible.
