Crawfish in Austin

It's crawfish season (cue the applause).  If you are looking for a delicious and fun crawfish boil this weekend in Austin then head down to the Shoal Creek Saloon at North Lamar and 9th (check the website for details on availability during the week).  For extra fun, take advantage of the weather and ride your bike there.

It’s an exciting new year and Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Whether you can’t wait for it or want to skip it all together, Austin Habitat Young Professionals has a reason for you to celebrate. 
HYP’s is holding our 6th Annual Build the Love on Monday, February 4th from 5 to 8 pm at Moonshine. Join HYP as we raise funds for Austin Habitat for Humanity to enable the dream of homeownership by helping deserving families build homes. 
Whether your tastes lean toward savoury, bitter, or sweet we'll have something for you. The evening will include an enticing spread of Moonshine's delicious food, Thirsty Planet's fabulous brews, a dessert-filled House of Sweets, and wine tastings. Plus enjoy the Battle of the Sexes (Round 2) and a chance to win great door prizes!

HYP Build the Love: 2.4.2013

Mark your calendars for February 4th, 2013, as the annual Austin Habitat Young Professionals Build the Love fundraiser is returning to Moonshine.  Planning is underway and this year's event looks to be even more fun than 2012's.  Stay tuned for more details.

Mark you calendars for August 23rd.  In honor of the upcoming Karaoke 5K, Austin Habitat Young Professionals will have a karaoke themed happy hour at Highball.  There will be free karaoke and other fun activities.

Thanks to everyone who came out to The Dogwood last night for the Austin Habitat Young Professional's July Happy Hour.  We had a great crowd and it was a fun event.

Special thanks to our July happy hour sponsor: Tabbedout.com.  I signed up for Tabbedout in order to take advantage of the special they worked out for HYP.   I'm not sure why I hadn't signed up for this service earlier.  The Tabbedout mobile app lets you follow your tab (at a participating bar or restaurant) and then pay out.  Thus, all you have to do to leave a bar (in which you are using Tabbedout) is to press a few buttons on your phone before taking off.  It's easy and convient.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Rattle Inn last evening for the Austin Habitat Young Professionals Hard Hat Happy Hour (as you can see by the photo, there were indeed real hard hats for us to wear).  Also, special thanks to HYP Board Member Mike Golden and his law firm, Boulette & Golden, for sponsoring last night's event.  It was very generous and we all greatly appreciated the sponsorship.    Also, it was great to see HYP's good friend Adam come over to sign people up for the upcoming Karaoke 5K.  All in all it last night was the ideal way to kick off the 2012 Summer of HYP.

HYP's next event will be on July 26th.  It will be for members only.  More details to come.

HYP's next house build, also for members only, will be only August 18th.  I like building houses more than I hate the heat, so I'll be there (with plenty of Gatorade).  Join HYP and join us to build.

Running: Karaoke 5K

Do you enjoy running and/or singing?  Do you want to help the Austin Habitat Young Professionals build a house?  Of course you do, which is why you should sign up for the Karaoke 5K.  This fun concept for a 5K will be held on September 29th (when chances are good that we'll be back into balmy double digit temperatures).  Proceeds from the event will be donated to Austin HYP (Austin Habitat for Humanity's young professional group).

Austin Habitat Young Professionals ("HYP") is kicking off it's summer with the HYP Hard Hat Happy Hour on June 28th at the Rattle Inn downtown.  Yes, you will get a hard hat.  Wear it as HYP breaks ground for an exceptional summer.  

HYP has upcoming:

• July HYP Member's Only Event
• August 18th Build Day for Members
• August Member Event and Pre Karaoke 5K Party

What is becoming a member of HYP about?  In short, it's about building.  Building leadership, social networks, professional networks, and community.  But most importantly, it's about building lives through the experience of Habitat for Humanity.  If you are a young professional in Austin who's ready to build homes and change lives while having some fun and meeting like-minded people then you should consider joining us. 

What does HYP ask of you?  First, we ask for a donation of only $20 per month.  Once you become a member, we ask for a commitment to help Austin Habitat for Humanity build communities by volunteering to assist HYP's fundraising efforts (which can include working on fun events), volunteering to work on HYP builds, or advocating for affordable housing in some capacity.  Of course, you can do all of the above.

Please join the Austin Habitat Young Professionals  at Hangar Lounge on May 3rd for a happy hour and fundraiser presented by our friends at Maker Capital and Ameripro Funding.   Donations from this fundraiser will go toward the 2011-2012 matching grant from State Farm.

Each year, HYP commits to raising funds and volunteering on-site to build a home with Austin Habitat for Humanity. Thanks to HYP's efforts in 2009, another family is now living in a safe, secure neighborhood in a home they can afford. It was an awesome feeling to see how thankful and gracious the Arellano family was when we dedicated their home! You should have seen the smiles that day!

This year mark’s HYP’s 5th anniversary and we are striving to raise more than ever before. We've set a goal of $100,000 in 2011. This will fully fund one Habitat house and provide Austin Habitat for Humanity with some additional funds to put towards another home.

Virtually all funds raised by HYP are generated through events like Build the Love, and we couldn't do it without you!
