Zilker Area Food: Uncle Nicky's Opening a Location on South Lamar

Uncle Nicky's, an Italian restaurant which has its original location in Austin's Hyde Park, will be opening a location on South Lamar sometime soon.   I haven't been to the Hyde Park location, but I have heard good things from friends.  

In other South Lamar food news:  I was at Walgreen's a few days ago and noticed progress on the building of the future Hattie B's location.   I do not yet know when that one will officially open, but I'm looking forward to delicious hot chicken once it does.  As I have mentioned in the past, I try to stop by Hattie B's every time I visit Nashville.

 You may have heard the rumors or seen the construction going on between Zilker Park and South Lamar.  KUT explains what the city is up to, and how it will involve fewer lanes for driving.  

Zilker Food: South Lamar Southside Flying Pizza Is Open

 After a few months of remodeling, the South Lamar location of Southside Flying Pizza is open again.

Food/Zilker Area News: Hattie B's Nashville Hot Chicken Coming to Austin

 

I'm fan of (reasonably) hot chicken, and whenever I visit Nashville I try to obtain some delicious Hattie B's.  Thus, I was pleased to learn they will be coming to Austin and opening a location on 2529 South Lamar (the site of the former Maria's Taco Xpress).  Hattie B's has a location in Dallas and plans to open one in Houston.  I do not yet know when the Austin location will open.

Zilker Area News: Luke's Inside Out Closing

 Sad news: after an 11 year run Luke's Inside Out trailer on south Lamar (by Gibson) will be closing Sunday.   It will be replaced by ChoppdATX which will sell New York style chopped cheese sandwiches (they are described as a cross between a Philly cheesesteak and a burger).  Also, a friend who ate at Luke's recently told me that ChoppdATX will keep the Luke's burger on the menu.  

Zilker Area News: Ski Shores on Barton Springs to Become Lou's

Earlier tonight I read on Eater Austin that McGuire Moorman Lambert Hospitality has bought both locations of Ski Shores.   Each restaurant is now closed for renovations.   While the original Lake Austin location (opened in 1954) is being spruced up but essentially remaining the same, the landlocked Barton Springs location (formerly an Austin Java before a run as Irish themed Darcy's Donkey) will reopen with the name Lou's.  Eater Austin says Lou's will have a casual menu and should be open by March 2022.  

Zilker Area News: Tiny Pies Coming to Lamar Union

 

I saw this on Saturday while walking to breakfast at Maudie's (tacos make great fuel for an early trip out to COTA for F1 United States Grand Prix related events).   Tiny Pies is coming to Lamar Union, to work out of the space formerly occupied by a purveyor of fancy juice drinks (not smoothies, as a friend told me he was once castigated for using the wrong beverage terminology).   I don't have any additional details; now that you have seen a photo of the sign you have as much information as I do.  What I can tell you is that in the event you have not tried Tiny Pies, they make some delicious products.

Zilker Area News: Coyote Sightings

 I've seen on a few neighborhood sites that coyotes have recently been seen in the Zilker neighborhood.  People have even reported daytime sightings, which I recall as hitherto extremely rare.   So, if you live in the area (or any neighborhood near a creek, greenbelt, etc):

• Keep small pets indoors or inside a fenced yard if possible.  
• Coyotes have killed many Zilker cats over the years.

Zilker Area News: Genie Car Wash Closed

 Genie Car Wash on South Lamar along with the adjacent Jiffy Lube and auto repair ship have closed.   Apartments and offices will be built on the site.  

If you need your car washed south of the river, here are a few options:

• Self Wash: Eureka Car Wash on South Lamar and Del Curto.  It's a self-wash setup. 
• Other people wash your car: The Finish Line  or Barton Springs Car Wash

If you really love Genie Car Wash, you can go to the location at 7320 Burnet Rd.   While you're up there, stop by Top Notch or Tumble 22.
